This week on Your Vote Counts, our political analysts cover the topics of vaccination, Medicaid cuts, the Glossip case and fair trials, and the race for Superintendent of the Oklahoma Department of Education.
Our experts expressed concern over the resurgence of measles due to misinformation regarding vaccines.
"This has become one of the biggest points of disinformation in this country, but yet the impacts are a dead child," political analyst Scott Mitchell said.
Our experts emphasize the importance of childhood immunizations to prevent unnecessary deaths.
According to our analysts, proposed federal Medicaid cuts could significantly impact Oklahoma's budget.
"The Medicaid population has continued to grow," Former Oklahoma State Representative Jason Dunnington said. "One of the reasons for that is we have a high level of poverty."
The cuts could potentially cost the state up to $700 million and impact healthcare for low-income residents.
The Supreme Court ruled that death row inmate Richard Glossip deserves a new trial due to prosecutorial misconduct, reinforcing the importance of fair trials.
"There may have been some prosecutorial misconduct where they didn't turn all of the evidence," Senator Paul Rosino said. "We should expect in Oklahoma, and this country, that every citizen is offered a fair trial, and that's all the Supreme Court is saying."
Rob Miller, Superintendent of schools in Bixby, has joined the race for Oklahoma Superintendent of the State Department of Education.
"I think there's a lot of concern about the way our public education is going," Rosino said. "I think there's some concerns that we're 49th in outcomes."
