After years of anticipation, the OKANA Resort & Indoor Waterpark is officially open, welcoming its first guests to an entertainment destination developed by the Chickasaw Nation.
The $400 million project, located along Interstate 40 next to the First Americans Museum, has been in the works for more than 30 years, according to tribal officials.
“We had the vision to do something that would improve visitation to the First Americans Museum,” Chickasaw Nation Governor Bill Anoatubby said.
The resort features more than 400 suites, which were sold out for the opening night, and a state-of-the-art indoor waterpark with attractions for all ages. Guests can experience a roller coaster-style waterslide, the FlowRider surfing simulator, and a lazy river.
“There are rides that give you air, and you can go to our low tide and just hang out,” said OKANA representative Laura Rudicel.
Beyond the water attractions, OKANA boasts a dozen restaurants and bars, positioning itself as a destination for vacationers, staycationers, and day-trippers alike.
“I have no doubt people will come from communities in the state, from Texas, Arkansas, and frankly from around the world,” said Dan Boren, Chickasaw Nation Secretary of Commerce.
The resort’s name, "OKANA," means water and friendship, a reflection of the experience tribal leaders hope to create for every guest.
Within the first 10 years of the resort and water park, the economic impact is expected to reach well over a billion dollars.
