For the third year in a row, the University of Oklahoma leads all colleges in Super Bowl representation, with seven former Sooners set to take the field this weekend—two with the Philadelphia Eagles and five with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Among them is Kansas City Chiefs starting center Creed Humphrey, a former OU standout with deep roots in Oklahoma.
Humphrey, a Shawnee native and former Shawnee High School football player, is set to make his third consecutive Super Bowl appearance. His journey continues to inspire young athletes in his hometown.
“It’s a lot to look up to, for sure, being such a big-time guy,” said Kendal Gillham, a junior at Shawnee High School who plays the same position as Humphrey once did.
Inside the school’s football locker room, Humphrey’s presence is still felt.
“You're like, someone great was here,” Gillham added.
Shawnee High School wrestling coach Larry James, who also coached Humphrey in eighth-grade football, recalls his dedication.
“He worked hard every day,” James said. “He was a dominating football player from his freshman and sophomore year on.”
Humphrey, already a two-time Super Bowl champion, now has a shot at a three-peat.
“Win or lose, it’s insane that he’s been in three Super Bowls,” James said.
As game day approaches, the Shawnee community is rallying behind their hometown hero. A Super Bowl watch party is planned at Shawnee Garage Burger Bar, where fans will gather for the third straight year to cheer him on.
Among the other Sooners on the field is former OU quarterback Jalen Hurts, who will lead the Eagles against Humphrey’s Chiefs.
The Super Bowl kicks off Sunday, and Shawnee will be watching.
