The Oklahoma Invitational Black Rodeo is set to take over Tulsa, promising to be "the hottest show on dirt" with steer wrestling, bull riding, broncos, and more.
Organizers are especially excited to bring the event to the community during the first week of Black History Month.
Jesse Guillory, a former National Western rodeo rider, came to the Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages Porch to share more about the event.
The rodeo will feature cowboys, cowgirls, and junior barrel racing, but one of the biggest highlights is a special performance by Langston University's Drumline—marking the first time the university will be integrated into the rodeo.
"We're excited about that... the performances are at one o'clock on Saturday, seven on Saturday night, and everybody's invited," Guillory said.
Beyond the competition, the event will welcome local school children to experience the Black Rodeo culture and the history of Black Wall Street in one shared space.
"Growing up as a kid, I always was a cowboy on the inside. Just didn't know that," he said. "My heroes were John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, watching Gunsmoke... I never thought about the fact that I could go out and actually compete and be a cowboy and rodeo."
He hopes the event will inspire young kids to dream big and see themselves in the sport.
"If we can just look in his eye or her eye and shake hands and see the gleam and the glow and how it influences them... we want to just keep that going," Guillory said.
The Oklahoma Invitational Black Rodeo takes place Saturday in Tulsa.
