A southwest Oklahoma City man was arrested over the weekend, accused of murdering his mother.
The arrested suspect claimed the stabbing was not intentional. Odis Watkins, 42, told police his mother ran into the knife he was holding.
Police said Watkins called 911 early Sunday morning to report he stabbed his mother inside their apartment near I-240 and South Walker Avenue. The victim, 65-year-old Carol Watkins could be heard in the background saying she needed an ambulance.
“When officers arrived, they found a woman there who was critically injured,” said Msgt. Gary Knight, Oklahoma City Police Department. “She had been stabbed.”
The arrest affidavit indicted Watkins was standing over his mother in the bathroom. The victim was taken to a local hospital with a stab wound to her chest but did not survive. Police took Watkins into custody and to downtown police headquarters for questioning.
“It appears the two became engaged in a disagreement or argument,” said Knight.
According to the affidavit, Watkins told investigators he was in the kitchen cutting chicken. Watkins said his mother came running into the kitchen angry that he had come home after a late night of drinking. Watkins said he was holding the knife out when his mother ran into it, stabbing her in the chest. Watkins told police his mother went into the bathroom saying she could not breathe. That was where she collapsed.
Watkins was booked into the Oklahoma County Detention Center on a second-degree murder complaint. He has not been formally charged by the Oklahoma County District Attorney's office.
