Thanksgiving and Christmas are right around the corner, and that means food drives are starting to pop up.
While organizations like the Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma have held holiday food drives in the past and local nonprofits put on food drives this time of year, one company said they decided to get ahead.
Capital Assets, a Tulsa-based company that owns apartment complexes, started a food drive for the food bank by targeting its own apartment complexes and calling for donations to help people in need.
"Thanksgiving is one of our favorite holidays, so we just wanted to pass the blessings along to the community," Greg Wright, president of Capital Assets, said. "We know there are people who don't have food at the right times, so we want to bless people for Thanksgiving."
The Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma says drives like this can make the donation process easier since people don’t have to go far to drop off food. Dwayne Sheridan, the food bank's education manager, said the food bank loves seeing people get involved around the holidays.
"We want to see people not have to take food very far," Sheridan said. "We want it to be convenient and easy, so if people are willing to put those together and make a localized food drive for their group or apartment complex or whatever it may be, we absolutely love it."
Sheridan added that anyone can set up a food drive. The easiest way to do that is to visit okfoodbank.org.
