Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy apologized after he sharply criticized fans during his weekly press conference.
He posted on social media on election night saying that was not his intent, but the situation has been the talk of campus all week.
Students on campus said the comments are disappointing, especially because expectations for this season were so high.
Oklahoma State junior Zachary Berger covers the football team for the student-produced O'Colly TV. He said this season has been one to forget for the Pokes and the recent comments made by Gundy are discouraging.
"You feel like you're in the low of the season already, you already have these expectations, at that point you're just like, wow, I feel like almost he hit a new low," Berger said.
Here's what Gundy said during his media session on Monday:
"The people who are negative and voicing their opinions are the same ones that can't pay their own bills. They're not taking care of themselves. They're not taking care of their own family. They're not taking care of their own job, but they have an obligation to speak out and complain about other people because it makes them feel better. But then in the end, they go to bed at night and they're the same failure they were before they said anything negative about anybody else."
O'Colly student newspaper sports editor Ashton Slaughter doesn't know how far that apology will go.
"I don't know if he really thinks that all these fans that are coming to spend their hard-earned money to watch games and cheer him on, cheer on the team, are all poor, I just think it's really a poor choice of words and a poor time to do it," he said.
University president Dr. Kasey Shrum said, "Coach Gundy's press conference comments did not reflect the position of the university."
She said she is grateful for the fans and donors. So far, no disciplinary action has been announced.
