Oklahoma's Own In Focus: Driving Instructor Provides Tips For Dealing With Road Rage

Two frightening road rage incidents happened within 20 days in Tulsa.

Earlier this month, a woman was forced off the I-44 bridge by another driver, causing her to fall 60 feet into a sand bar. And Wednesday night, a driver was shot in the arm in another dangerous act behind the wheel.

Driving Instructor Robert Cole says a lot of road rage stems from letting things get under your skin.

"Try not to take things personally; you never know what might have upset that person; I mean, I could be just something like that,” said Cole.

No one died in either of those recent cases. But Cole says they show why you should try to create some distance between you and aggressive drivers.

"If someone is irritated, I try to avoid them if at all possible," said Cole.

He has been teaching drivers for decades and doesn't understand why some people get so upset while on the road.

"They're not even understanding that this is a beginner driver learning to drive, and they're irritated with them."

He says road rage isn't the most common issue drivers face, but it's something people should prepare for.

"It should be in the back of your mind, ya know, somewhere, but hopefully, you can do everything you can to avoid the situation," said Cole.
