Work Continues To Improve Trails At Turkey Mountain

Trails at Turkey Mountain are being transformed and improved. The goal is to make sure Turkey Mountain stays a place where families can always go to enjoy the outdoors. As construction continues or storms cause issues -- the city has created a place online where you can go to see which trails are open for adventures and which ones are temporarily closed.

"To be a kid at heart -- that is a lot of what we get to do," said Jason Stouder with Progressive Trail Design. For crews at Progressive Trail Design, the start of a job looks and sounds a lot like a cruise on a mountain bike.

"I have another crew starting at Turkey Mountain today so to get them started I wanted them to get the feel of Turkey Mountain," said Stouder.

The crews have worked on trails, which people from all over the country come to ride -- in Northwest Arkansas, Colorado, California, Virginia, to name a few. They are on scene here in Tulsa, helping our community keep Turkey Mountain the quiet, sanctuary it has been for years.

The trails they are working on in Tulsa aren't just for bikes -- they are for hikers and for families.

"The project itself is four different pillars. One of them is to revitalize our trails and make them sustainable, another is to reintroduce habitat management out here. Another is to improve the access, add programming to attract people to Turkey Mountain," said Ryan Howell with River Parks Authority.

The trail building alone is split up into five phases. The community was involved in the master plan process of this project and overemphasized their desire to keep Turkey Mountain wild; to make sure this is a place that can be enjoyed for years to come.

The crews working on it said they feel the same way. "We really enjoy coming into a community where people want to preserve nature and want to be a part of it and experience it," said Stouder.
