Sapulpa motel shooting leaves 1 dead with a suspect in custody

Sapulpa police say Kamyra Shavon Smallwood, 24, was arrested after a young male was found shot to death inside a room at the Regency Inn near I-44 and 49th West Avenue.

Officers responded around 9:30 p.m. Thursday after a 911 caller reported someone waving them down and saying a person had a gun. Police say they detained Smallwood near the scene and were then told someone had been shot in one of the rooms.

Inside the motel, police found a young male victim who was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not been released, but officers say those involved appear to be young adults or teenagers.

Investigators say a semi-automatic handgun was used in the shooting and has been recovered. Detectives believe the three people inside the room knew each other and that the shooting followed some kind of disturbance. Officers say this appears to be an isolated incident.

The Sapulpa Police Department says the scene is now clear and the investigation remains ongoing. Additional witness statements are being collected.
