What’s usually one of the busiest weekends of the year at Oologah Lake is looking much different this Fourth of July.

Instead of boats and fireworks, the lake is unusually quiet, and the high water levels are having a big impact on both festivities and local businesses.

A Holiday on Hold

Robert Moore, Boomfest Firework Show organizer, says this weekend was supposed to be a major celebration. But rising lake levels have forced a change of plans.

"We couldn't get people on the lake, and it was unsafe to be around the lake, so the Corps decided to reschedule the firework show," Moore said.

The annual Boomfest fireworks display will now take place over Labor Day weekend, when organizers hope the lake is safer and more accessible.

Businesses Take a Hit

At Redbud Marina, the situation is more than just a setback; it’s hurting business during their most important season.

"The rain and storms we had the other night, the water went right back up," Michael Fawcett said. "It's one of those things where you take two steps forward and three steps back."

High water has flooded parking lots, forcing staff to create makeshift walkways to the docks. Deliveries to the lakeside restaurant are now arriving by boat.

"We're probably at about 35% of what we should be this time of year," Fawcett said. "And myself and other marina owners, we have three months out of the year to make all of our money. It's not happening for any of us."

Looking Ahead

Despite the challenges, Fawcett and his team are staying optimistic. They’re closely monitoring water levels with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and hope to reopen boat ramps soon.

"We hope for the best every weekend," Fawcett said. "But when there’s no lake traffic, it’s hard."

To keep the holiday spirit alive, Redbud Marina is planning a boat parade on July 5th.
