The Indian Healthcare Resource Center of Tulsa opened an expanded clinic near downtown, offering more services in-house for patients they would have had to refer to other facilities.

During a ceremony Wednesday, Rear Admiral Travis Watts, who heads the Indian Health Service in Oklahoma City, noted, "At a time when urban and rural healthcare systems are failing in many cases, this healthcare system is expanding and growing."

The expansion creates 110,000 square feet for clinic space, over what was two city blocks at 550 S Peoria in Tulsa.

"We refer 600 patients a month out for specialty care, and for those that can't pay, we pay for the service," said Carmelita Wamgeo Skeeter, the longtime CEO of the clinic. "We thought it would be better to build a larger facility and bring those services in." The clinic serves 15,000 patients, representing 140+ native tribes.
