The Tulsa Zoo, now home to a predominantly geriatric herd, says its team is trained to care for older elephants like Tina, who requires special accommodations due to her age.
At her advanced age, Tina needs extra support. Zookeepers shred her food because her teeth can no longer handle tough textures.
According to the Tulsa Zoo, all but two of its elephants are considered geriatric. Each elephant is given their own individualized care plan to meet whatever their needs may be.
Tina and a male elephant named Billy arrived in Oklahoma earlier this year from the Los Angeles Zoo. Their relocation followed a lengthy legal battle led by an animal rights group, which fought to move the elephants to a sanctuary.

While a sanctuary was the group’s goal, Tulsa Zoo was ultimately chosen as the new home.
Zoo officials say Tina is adjusting well to her new environment. Visitors can expect to see her enjoying her new routine as the staff continues to prioritize her health and comfort in her golden years.
