A man released from prison last week was accused of breaking into a northwest Oklahoma City apartment. Police said a resident shot 37-year-old John Adame on Tuesday night after he kicked in her front door.
The victim and a witness told police they had never seen Adame before. The witness believed Adame was seeking shelter from the cold but turned violent on her next-door neighbor when she would not open her door.
“It was scary because this apartment is usually quiet,” said Breeann Wetselline, a neighbor.
Breeann Wetselline and her husband first encountered 37-year-old John Adame outside their front door.
“We heard snoring and so we opened the door, and he was laying right here,” said Wetselline. “So, we didn’t think nothing of it because we’ve had homeless people come sleep here before.”
The couple initially did not call security or police on Adame because it was cold. However, they changed their minds a short time later.
“Next thing you know, we heard someone try to open our door,” said Wetselline.
Adame then went to her neighbor's door.
“He was like yelling and cursing and yelling racial slurs at her and saying he was going to break in,” said Wetselline. “I was still on the phone with the police saying, ‘He’s trying to break into her door, and she has kids over there.’”
Police said the mother-of-four shot Adame in the neck when he broke down the door.
“He turned and ran,” said Msgt. Gary Knight with the Oklahoma City Police Department. “Officers found him a very short time later in an adjacent building when he was taken into custody. He was seriously wounded, had to be taken to surgery once he was at the hospital.”
Adame survived the shooting. Neighbors said they would have taken the same measures to defend their home.
“Don’t be trying to break into people’s doors,” said Wetselline. “She said she warned him like, you know, ‘I have a gun.’”
Adame will be booked into the Oklahoma County Detention Center once he is released from the hospital. According to the Oklahoma Department of Corrections website, Adame spent less than a year in prison for a grand larceny conviction out of Carter County.
