When Tammy Carter was approached about doing tours of Oklahoma’s historic black towns last year, she had no idea how much she would be impacted by this part of Oklahoma's history.
Carter started the tours last year with one charter bus. This year she has already filled four buses and is ready to add more.
“It's not just a black trip; it’s a trip for everybody so that they can see our history, where we came from, where we’re at, and really where we can go,” said Tammy Carter, owner of Travel with Tammy, travel agency.
The tour is spread over four weekends, April 19th, May 3rd, June 14th, and June 28th spending time in each town learning about the town and the culture.
“That’s the great thing about doing this is you get to meet the town historians, who get to tell you about the towns. That was so much stuff that I didn’t know,” said Carter.
For Carter, last year’s tours were inspiring for her.
“Most of them had less than we have now, and to see their acceleration and what they did then, I hope that everyone gains that perseverance,” said Carter.
Participants learned things they never taught in schoolbooks.
“Boley, gosh, their history is so rich, they had their own electricity company,” said Carter.
Each tour will visit two to five towns where guests will also visit the local shops and have lunch.
“They’re day trips, so we leave at eight in the morning, and we get back at about five or six o’clock,” said Carter.
Each weekend for the bus tours is booked separately and the deadline for booking the trips is March 15. For information visit www.travelwithtammy.net.
