In a unanimous vote on Thursday, the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association (OSSAA) overturned the Edmond North High School girls wrestling team’s suspension, allowing them to finish their season.
The OSSAA suspended the team in late January citing Board Policy V, which states:
"Anytime an egregious act of unsportsmanlike conduct occurs two or more times during the same season, at the same school, in the same activity, the team and or individual will be suspended from participation in that activity for the remainder of the season.”
The district appealed the suspension in front of the OSSAA on Thursday.
"Two parents affiliated with the Edmond North Girls Wrestling Program acted inappropriately during two events -- on January 18th and January 25th,” said Principal of Edmond North H.S. Dandy Peeler.
Another administrator said, “The amount of hours; conversations that I have been a part of the last two weeks since the situation took place -- I can assure you this is not a joke for Edmond Public Schools.”
The OSSAA did not hold back its questions.
“Will those two parents be allowed to attend the playoff games?” a member of the OSSAA asked Edmond administrators.
The district responded, “We have no desire for them to be there, but we can’t control an away event.”
Back and forth, the two discussed.
“And I know you can’t control away events, but to some extent, you can because wherever we go is our campus,” the OSSAA stated.
The OSSAA voted 11-0 to reinstate the girls’ wrestling team.
In a statement to News 9, Edmond Public Schools said:
“We are excited that our wrestlers will get to compete and continue their season."
The Huskies can compete in the playoffs which start on Monday, an administrator shared.
