The world's top cornhole players are in Tulsa this week, competing for a world championship. The tournament is the big finish to the American Cornhole Organization's 20th season. It is open to players, spectators, and the whole family.
Frank Geers is the founder and president of the American Cornhole Organization (ACO). From building the best equipment to organizing events, and creating a ranking system, he has spent the last 20 years growing the professional sport of cornhole.
Geers also invented the idea of a two-sided bag, which added more strategy to the game. "One side is slick, one side is stick, so you have got defense and offensive playmaking there," he said.
The 6-day event is an annual gathering of hundreds of the top players in the world. It is always free for spectators and even includes daily opportunities for anyone to play for prizes. "We have got 8 tournaments a day in the tailgate zone running every hour and a half on the hour and a half," Geers added. "If you have never played cornhole come on down, experience it, check it out, and if you want to get in the game, you have a chance to get in the game."
There is also player meet and greets, fun Game Challenges, and vendors. For more information visit the ACO's website.
Tulsa was chosen to be the host city of this year's ACO World Championships of Cornhole. The event is being held at the Arvest Convention Center at 100 Civic Center in downtown Tulsa.
Players from over 25 states and several different countries are represented. At the end of the tournament one person will be crowned the King or Queen of Cornhole. "That is the beauty of this game," Geers said. "If you are male or female you can play this game, if you are 8 or 80 you can play this game, so it is just a wonderful sport that anybody can engage in."
The world championships are July 21-26. Doors open at 8 a.m. daily, except on Friday when they open at 7:30 a.m. There are several brackets for singles, doubles, and adaptive players.
