Every time someone dies in a house fire, Tulsa firefighters go to that neighborhood and install free smoke detectors.
That’s what they did Monday near I-244 and West 41st Street South.
The fire Friday led to a man’s death.
Two people were in the home Friday when it caught fire.
The man died and the woman was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
Firefighters knocked on hundreds of doors Monday in the neighborhood to make sure smoke detectors were working or installing new ones.
The smoke alarms are from the Red Cross and have a ten-year battery life so people don’t have to worry about changing the batteries out as often.
Firefighters say the timing is critical since it’s already on people’s minds in the neighborhood.
"When you can tell people in a community that this happened two days ago, it really emphasizes the seriousness of having this equipment, and often gives us more opportunity to get those life-saving devices installed,” said Andy Little, the Public Information Officer for the Tulsa Fire Department.
They recommend putting smoke detectors in hallways and bedrooms close to where you’re sleeping to make sure you’re alerted as soon as possible if there’s a fire.
