With dangerous freezing temperatures headed to the Oklahoma City metro area, many homeowners are looking for ways to reduce heating bills while staying warm indoors.

An Okl flooring expert from Footprint Floors, Jimmy Whitehead, has a few simple things to check to keep your home comfortable but also help save on energy costs.

Add Area Rugs

Rugs act as an insulating layer to keep your feet warm and reduce heat loss through hard flooring surfaces.

"What people don't realize is that flooring expands and contracts," said Whitehead.

Whitehead believes the need for an area rug can depend on the age of the house.

Seal Gaps

It's important to check for gaps between baseboards and flooring and seal these with caulk or weatherstripping to prevent drafts.

"If you have door thresholds with gaps or cracks then you'll have air coming through," said Whitehead. "If you address those then you can save a lot."

You can watch videos online to learn about caulking or call a professional company like Footprint Floors.

Maintain Your Floors

Whitehead advises cleaning and maintaining floors regularly, as dirt and wear can reduce insulating properties over time.

By cleaning regularly, Whitehead believes that people will notice and find things that may look out of the norm.

"Let's fix a small problem before it becomes a big one," said Whitehead.
