Two men from Guymon will serve life sentences for the murder of an Oklahoma City man. Police found 47-year-old Matthew Brooks shot to death in northwest Oklahoma City in 2023.

The now convicted murderers pled guilty to the Brooks’ death last week. Court records showed Jose Martinez, 30, and Jose Resendiz, 23, were sentenced to life in prison on Friday and waived their rights to appeal.

How the murder investigation started

The murder investigation dates back to November 2023. Brooks was found shot to death in the driver's seat of a van parked near Northwest 10th St. and Meridian Ave. A neighbor told News 9 that she stepped outside her home and heard five gunshots.

“We heard the shots,” said Rosily Johnson, a neighbor. “It was like three real fast and then a little break and then two more.”

Johnson and other residents were on edge knowing the killers were at large.

“So, we don’t know what the motive for the killing was,” said Msgt. Gary Knight, Oklahoma City Police Department.

How the arrest happened

In December 2023, investigators identified the truck Martinez, Resendiz, and 22-year-old Eric Triana used to leave the murder scene through Flock and neighborhood cameras, cell phone records, and casino video.

U.S. Marshals arrested Triana and Martinez in Guymon while Resendiz left the state. He was arrested in Kansas City last January. Martinez and Resendiz were charged with first-degree murder and Triana was charged with accessory to murder.

Court records showed Triana took a guilty plea last year and received a 10-year suspended sentence to be supervised by the Oklahoma Department of Corrections. The men convicted of murder not only waived their right to appeal the conviction but also to request any future commutation of sentences, parole, or pardons.
