Tulsa Public Schools says mid-year testing scores are heading in the right direction in the elementary schools, but not in the middle schools.

The scores released at the board meeting on Monday are called MAP scores.

MAP is a test given three times a school year, during the Spring, Fall, and Winter.

The district talked about the differences between the environment at the elementary schools and how that changes when kids get to middle school.

Board members also talked about how to get the students back up to speed.

The data show the number of economically disadvantaged students in kindergarten, first, and second-grade testing at the 50th percentile, increased by more than 5 percent this semester.

The district also says it was up nearly 10 percent for kids in the third, fourth, and fifth grades, putting them at pre-pandemic testing levels.

For middle schoolers, their scores decreased by less than a percentage point, but the district says these numbers were already below the goals the district set.

TPS says middle schoolers have lower attendance, more suspensions, and the highest number of new teachers.

The district says it wants to help kids improve those issues and talked about focusing on giving them extra attention when it comes to reading.

The district says these scores are usually in line with state testing scores, but since the OSTP is using different metrics this year, they are not sure that will still be the case.
