Former OSU Cowboy Rickie Fowler in the hunt at The Open

Fowler fired a 2-under 69, which was good enough for a tie for 10th place. For the first time since 1938, there are five players tied for the lead at 4-under after the opening round.

After the first round of The Open from Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland, former OSU Cowboy Rickie Fowler finds himself in the mix.

Fowler fired a 2-under 69, which was good enough for a tie for 10th place. For the first time since 1938, there are five players tied for the lead at 4-under after the opening round.

Thanks to a top-10 finish at the Memorial Tournament, Fowler earned his way into The Open for the 13th time and second straight year. It's no surprise Fowler played well on Thursday at Royal Portrush, because he finished tied for sixth at the same course back in 2019.

In fact, Fowler has historically played well at The Open, logging four top-15 finishes, including a top-two finish back in 2014.

After his round, Fowler spoke with reporters and said, "I love playing over here. It's a style of golf I love to play. I know I can compete in any style of golf, but especially this." Fowler added, "It's nice to get off to a solid start, because you can take yourself out of the tournament pretty quickly with a poor round."

Fowler will begin his second round at 1:08 a.m. Central Time.
